Canada’s Prime Minister looking for One million Nigerian's to apply for Canadian Employment Visa

Canada Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, has begs with Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari, to allow one million Nigerians enter Canada under a new Employment and Migration Programme designed for immigrants.

According to Trudeau, immigrants from Nigeria have been a strong force in Canada’s growth in all sectors of its economy.

“We can’t undermine or overlook the contribution of immigrants in Canada’s development especially our brothers and sisters from Nigeria”, Trudeau said.

The PM added that, over the past three years, Canada has granted residency to all Nigerians who were illegally living in Canada and applied to remain. “We granted them and urging everyone to apply. It’s good we document everyone to know how many people we are to cater for”, he said.

In a memo sent to the Nigeria High Commission in Canada, the Employment and Migration Programme will allow Nigerians wishing to live in Canada to first obtain job before traveling to the country.

“The programme’s website will be launched next week and all available jobs will be listed. Currently there are over 6 million vacancies and we are hoping that Buhari allows at least one million people from Nigeria”, a spokesperson for the Canadian Labour Department, Shadrack Scott said.

Earlier this year, the Canadian Parliament announced plans to add more new permanent residents in the next three years.

Canada welcomed more than 286,000 permanent residents in 2017 and projects that number could reach 350,000 this year in addition to one million seeking from the West Africa nation.

“Thanks in great part to the newcomers we have welcomed throughout our history, Canada has developed into the strong and vibrant country we all enjoy,” said Ahmed Hussen, Canada’s minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship (IRCC).

Hussen, himself an immigrant from Somalia, said the influx will help offset Canada’s aging population and declining birth rate while growing its labor force.

Canada’s friendly stance towards new residents comes as many other Western nations, including the United States, are adopting more restrictive immigration policies.

Canada is especially dedicated to offering protection to refugees. The United Nations Refugee Agency reported unprecedented levels of refugees in 2017, with the number of forcibly displaced people reaching 68.5 million.

Nigerian activist bags 12yrs in jail for defamation and incitement

Social media commentator, Ibrahim Garba Wala, has been sentenced to 12 years imprisonment over offences bordering on criminal defamation and public incitement.
Justice Yusuf Halilu of a High Court sitting in Maitama, Abuja, on Monday, convicted Wala, who is the convener of Citizens Action to Take Back Nigeria (CATBAN) in 3 of the 4-count charges brought against him by the office of the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF).

Justice Halilu convicted him fo managing unlawful association, public incitement and defamation of character over social media posts against the chairman of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), Abdullahi Muhammed.

The NAHCON boss had alleged that Wala used his Facebook page to incite the public against him and defame him and that of the commission.

The court agreed with the prosecution that Wala criminally defamed Muhammed after he alleged that the NAHCON boss “made N3 billion for himself” from the 2017 Hajj operations
The judge said Wala wrote on his Facebook page that he has documents to prove the allegation, but failed to provide the document to prove his claims in court.#aranewstrends

At Lagos High Court sitting at Igbosere, Lagos, South west Nigeria on Monday renewed a bench warrant for the arrest of the former Super Eagles captain, Augustine Jay-Jay Okocha, for refusal to appear in court over a case of tax evasion.

The presiding Judge, Justice Adedayo Akintoye extended the arrest warrant, originally made last January 29, following an application by the Lagos State Government.

Prosecution counsel, Mr Yusuf Sule told the court that Okocha had yet to settle out of court, the 2017 income tax evasion charge.

Okocha, who was not in court, was not represented by any lawyer.

The government alleged that Okocha had also failed to appear in court since October 5, 2017, when the case was first mentioned.

At the resumption of proceedings on Monday, Sule said Okocha had made contact with the Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS).

He said: “The defendant (Okocha) is trying to settle, but he is yet to make any payment. In the circumstances, we will be asking for a further date.”

Granting his application, Justice Akintoye ruled: that “Bench Warrant issued to continue to subsist against the defendant. Case adjourned till May 28, 2019 for further directions.”

The government filed a three-count charge against Okocha on June 6, 2017, accusing him of: “Failure to furnish return of income for tax purposes with the Lagos State Internal Revenue Service contrary to Section 94 (1) of the Personal income-tax Tax Act Cap P8 Laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 2004 (As Amended).

Failure to pay income tax contrary to Section 56(a) and (b) of the Lagos State Revenue Administration Law No. 8 of 2006 and failure to furnish return of Income for tax purposes with the Lagos State Internal Revenue Service contrary to Section 94(1)of the Personal Income Tax Act Cap P8 Laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 2004 (As Amended).”
